What Is Cabinet Refacing?

What Is Cabinet Refacing?

It happened. You saw some cabinets you really loved and now you want to update the ones in your own home. So, now that you’ve fallen in love with those brand new shaker doors and drawers you saw in someone else’s home, how do you make it happen in your own?

When you want to upgrade the look of the cabinets in your home, it can sometimes be difficult to decide where to begin. Should I replace the cabinets? How long will it take? Do I hire a contractor? How much is all of this going to cost?

The good news is that you have the option of refacing your current cabinets and, by refacing your cabinets, you can do it yourself and save time and money. So, what is cabinet refacing?

Let’s Start With What It’s Not…

Replacing your cabinets usually requires tearing out your old cabinets. You then will have to deal with the task of installing your new ones. This will involve a lot of work. This usually includes tasks such as leveling them, attaching them to walls, attaching them to each other, installing and leveling countertops, and multiple other tasks that can be time consuming and costly. You may even want to hire a contractor to do it because it is such a labor-intensive task.

Refacing your cabinets does not involve any of those tasks. It does require a little work, but nothing you can’t do yourself in a short amount of time.

What It Is

When you reface your cabinets, you are simply updating the look of them by replacing certain parts of the cabinet, specifically the doors and drawer fronts. You don’t have to tear anything out or hire a contractor to do it.

That’s all it is. Almost…

So What Do I Have To Do?

First, you’ll need to measure for your new cabinet doors and  drawer fronts. Once you have your measurements, you’ll want to pick out the doors you want. Then order the product you want. Don’t forget the accessories!

When you have received the new products, first thing’s first. Check to make sure it is what you ordered and that it is in good condition after shipping. If not, notify your supplier right away. Then you can begin the task of installation.

Remove the old doors, drawer fronts, and if you are replacing them, the drawer boxes as well. Install the hardware you’ve purchased to go with the new ones and then install your new products.

Then, enjoy the new look.

Wait A Minute, Won’t The Frames Look Different Than The Doors?

Good question, but fortunately one that is easily answered. This is where something called a  veneer comes in. In order to match the exposed parts of the old cabinets, you would purchase matching veneers that install over the existing frame. These are also easy to install and help to make your cabinets look brand new.

Install your veneer before putting the new doors into place.

Refacing your cabinets is a simple, cost effective way to improve the look of your cabinetry quickly. Whether you prefer a  raised panel with arch, a flat beaded panel, a louvered door, or any other style, you easily make it happen.
